The McIntyre Ranch Project
In 1991, a group of prominent Canadian artists toured the Oldman River by raft and canoe and spent a brief sojourn at the historical McIntyre Ranch, located 35 miles east of Cardston, near Magrath, Alberta. Thirteen artists from coast to coast – sculptures, photographers and painters in oil and watercolour – enjoyed the hospitality of the Thrall family while exploring the ranch’s 55,000 acre panorama and recording it in sketches, drawings, photographs and memory. Thirteen years later, in the summer of 2004, eighteen artists, writers and a filmmaker, a few of whom had participated in the previous gatherings, joined to share a week of inspiration in this unique locale. The work from that experience has resulted in the second McIntyre Ranch Project exhibition, presented at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in 2005.
